REMNANTS of ROSWELL
The Remnants of Roswell is a series depicting what’s left within the community after businesses leave, the military decommissions the base, a pandemic, and homes are abandoned. These are structures are so integrated into the community the locals drive by every day without a second thought. Gone are businesses that have helped the city survive for years. Mom-and-pop shops with papered windows and barred doors, discreetly telling us they are no longer open to customers.
This series pays homage to the past, to the structures and buildings that are still standing; to the forgotten and abandoned that are so engrained with our everyday lives. Armed with a medium format camera to capture the details of these markers in the city, the intention is to photograph the remnants of the community. Whether it’s abandoned tracks, a boarded up Queen Anne house or the old cotton processing factory, Roswell is not unfamiliar with loss. Even with the tourist industry, the totems of the past stand as a reminder. Most will think it adds to the charm of the city, not giving a second thought. Each community landscape, in so many cities and towns all over the world, is being altered by the decay of structures. In the 1970s it was the buildup of cities and the suburban sprawl. More and more today, we see so much just left to decay. This is a blow to the community: less housing, less stores, less businesses. It now becomes a socio-economic issue that doesn’t seem to be getting addressed. The images reflect that issue. They are the man-altered by way of abandonment, leading to that property being forgotten. Welcome to The Remnants of Roswell.
